Casing

Borehole casing in Kenya costs about KES 2,269 per metre in stable ground and about KES 2,569 per metre where mud rotary is used. On a 100m borehole that is roughly KES 230,000, which makes casing the second biggest line in the quote after the drilling itself.

Because it is that large, it is also the easiest place to quietly make a quote look cheap.

What casing does

The casing is the pipe that lines the hole. It stops the walls collapsing, keeps surface water and contaminants from running down into your aquifer, and holds the screen that lets clean water in at the right depth.

Around it goes the gravel pack, about KES 280 a metre, which filters fine sand out before it reaches the pump. Skimping here is how boreholes end up pumping silt and killing pumps.

uPVC or steel

uPVC casing is the norm for domestic boreholes in Kenya. It does not corrode, it is lighter and it is cheaper. Steel is used where the ground is unstable or the hole is very deep and the casing has to carry real load.

What matters more than the material is the wall thickness and that the screen sits against the water-bearing zone the survey identified. Ask which class of casing is quoted, not just how many metres.

Why Proboreholedrillers

One team from the survey to the first glass of water

A borehole is five jobs bundled into one: the survey that finds the water, the permits that make it legal, the drilling, the test that proves the yield, and the pump. We run all five for you, with licensed rigs and a quote broken down line by line, so you know exactly what you are paying for before anyone starts.

Frequently asked questions

How much is borehole casing in Kenya?+

About KES 2,269 per metre with air rotary drilling and about KES 2,569 per metre with mud rotary. On a 100m borehole that is roughly KES 230,000.

Is uPVC or steel casing better for a borehole?+

uPVC suits most domestic boreholes: it will not corrode and it costs less. Steel is for unstable ground or very deep holes where the casing has to carry load.

Is casing included in the per-metre drilling price?+

In a properly quoted borehole, yes. The KES 6,700 per metre air-rotary rate already includes casing, graveling, well development and test pumping. If a quote is far cheaper, check that casing has not been stripped out.
