There is no single best borehole drilling company in Kenya, because the right contractor depends on your geology, your county and your budget. What you can compare is evidence: who publishes their pricing, who can show a current Water Resources Authority licence, and who has finished boreholes you can go and look at.
We run borehole projects ourselves, so we have an interest here and you should read this knowing that. We have not put ourselves on the list. The four below are the established names, and the criteria are the ones we would use if we were the one paying.
How we compared them
Three criteria, all checkable. Pricing transparency: does the company publish a per-metre rate and a line-by-line breakdown, or does it only quote behind a form. Verifiable credentials: a current WRA licence, NEMA compliance, and registrations such as NCA or ISO. Track record: boreholes completed, years trading and county coverage.
We deliberately did not rank on brand recognition. The best known name is not automatically the best value, and in this market it usually costs more.
1. Borehole Drillers Africa
The strongest verifiable track record we found: over 2,500 boreholes, more than 15 years trading, WRMA licensed, NCA registered and ISO 9001:2015 certified, with six regional offices covering all 47 counties.
Pros: scale, certification and the ability to reach any county. Cons: no published pricing at all, so you cannot sanity-check a quote before you engage them, and their website answers almost nothing about cost.
2. Grekkon
The most transparent pricing in the market. Grekkon publishes a full per-metre itemisation, mobilisation through to water analysis, totalling KES 6,700 a metre for air rotary and KES 15,050 for mud rotary. They operate seven branches and have been trading since 2017.
Pros: you can check their arithmetic before you call, which almost nobody else allows. Cons: they are primarily an irrigation and agricultural equipment business, so drilling is one line among many rather than the whole company.
3. Davis & Shirtliff
The best known water name in Kenya, with by far the largest support and spares network. If a pump fails in eight years, they will still be trading and they will have the part.
Pros: brand reliability, nationwide service, real warranties. Cons: they price at the premium end, and their drilling is an extension of an equipment business. Ask specifically what the premium buys beyond the name.
4. Menengai Drilling
A smaller and newer operator that publishes a clear cost breakdown and, unusually, an honest payback argument rather than just a price list.
Pros: transparent about cost and straight about what a borehole saves you. Cons: a much shorter track record than the others here, and a smaller footprint, so check coverage for your county.
Where we fit
We are a newer name than the four above and we have not ranked ourselves among them, because the thing that should decide this is finished boreholes you can go and look at.
