The best-known water name in Kenya, with by far the largest support and spares network. If a pump needs a part in eight years, they will still be trading and they will have it. Where after-sales service and brand assurance matter most to you, that network is worth a great deal.

Publishes a clear cost breakdown and, unusually, an honest payback argument rather than just a price list. A transparent, straightforward operator that is well worth including in your quotes.

Whichever company you lean towards, ask the same four things, because they are the ones that actually protect you. Does the rig coming to your plot hold a current Water Resources Authority permit, in the name of the company quoting you? Is the quote itemised per metre, and does it include the survey, the permits, the wellhead and the pump, or are those waiting for you further down the page?

What happens if the hole comes up dry, and is that in writing? And can they show you two finished boreholes in your county that you can go and look at? A company that answers all four without hesitating is the one to trust.

The single most useful skill in choosing a company is being able to read a quote, because a good quote and a padded one can carry the same headline number. You should be able to add them up and reach the total.

One that gives you a single figure and asks you to trust it may be excellent, but you have no way to tell until the rig is on site and the money is spent. Thinner casing, a shorter gravel pack, well development skipped to save a day, the survey and permits quietly left off the sheet. The hole works on handover and starts to fail eighteen months later, by which point re-drilling costs more than doing it once would have.

So the right comparison is not the lowest rate, it is the most complete quote at a fair rate. A company a little dearer that cases the hole properly and hands you both certificates is the cheaper borehole over ten years. Depth matters more than rate too: a low per-metre figure in a deep county is the expensive job. This is why we survey before we quote, and it is a fair thing to expect of anyone you shortlist.

A borehole is not a product off a shelf, it is a promise about ground nobody can see. What you are buying, beyond the hole itself, is judgement: where to drill, how deep to go, which method the geology needs, and the honesty to tell you if the answer is no.
